Based on my fifty years or so of buying and using cookware - some good, some not so good - I'm extremely impressed with the Culina cookware that I've seen. The layering of stainless steel and aluminum gives a great combination of even heat distribution and strength. If cared for properly, the pasta pot should last a lifetime. The pot can be used as a conventional pot for cooking pasta, or remove the strainer insert and use the 5-quart pot for soups, stews, or any other liquid-based cooking. For cooking pasta or other foods like vegetables and fruits, with the strainer insert, you won't need a separate colander.

The cookware looks great with its mirror finish on the outside. You're probably not interested in this, but from my metallurgy courses in engineering school, I remember that the 18/10 stainless steel in Culina cookware has a composition of 18% chromium and 10% nickel. This is high grade steel that's often used in finer cutlery and high-quality cookware. The 430 stainless steel cladding on the bottom of the pot is also known as X6Cr17 steel, which has excellent thermal properties that make a superior heat conductor. Curiously - and you can try this with a magnet - the 18/10 steel's crystalline structure makes this steel virtually non-magnetic, while the 430 stainless steel cladding on the bottom of the pot is slightly magnetic. Because the steel is such a good heat conductor, the pot heats up very quickly.

The pot, strainer insert, and lid together weigh just a bit less than 6 pounds. It's no lightweight, but the heavy-gauge metal composition gives it the strength and durability to give many years of good service.

The Culina pasta pot was provided to me for evaluation. I did not promise to post a review, but I stated that if I did review the product, it would be an honest, unbiased review.
