Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) We're already fans of the Contigo travel mugs, but Contigo's got a few improvements on these newest models and we now love them even more!

First of all, I love the sleek black color of the West Loop mug. It's very cool. I assume, however, from past experience, that the color will scratch eventually. My husband has a physically active job and his coffee mugs get dropped and dented..a lot...and we've lost color on past mugs. This doesn't bother me much, as I believe most people won't be quite so rough on their appliances. But do note that the color will likely scratch off under extreme circumstances.

The drip-free feature is a no brainer. As I already mentioned, hubby's rough work situation has lost a lot of coffee pre-Contigo – so this is our favorite perk of these mugs! Even with the harsh treatment our mugs have received in the past, we've never had a problem with leakage, but the new lock feature on the West Loop mug make an already great feature, better!

Now for my favorite part of the newest West Loop Stainless Steel Mug: the cleaning! Contigo has designed a way for you to very easily pop up the mechanics inside the lid of the mug making cleaning a breeze! No more 'mysteries' growing under the cap! Another wonderful improvement for this wifey who does all the dishes (by hand, I might add)! ;-)

Contigo mugs are a bit on the expensive side – but we find them deserving of the price! They are well constructed, truly leak-proof, and keep your drinks hot/cold for hours. The newest improvements make these mugs well worth buying!

Go, Contigo!

Boy, this is a hard pan to find! Since Amazon.com did not have this item in stock, I contacted T-Fal to see if it was still available and where I might buy it. Here's the reply that I got from T-Fal:

========================================

We received your e-mail via T-falUSA.com, and we thank you for your interest in our products.

T-Fal products are available at many national retail stores. The T-Fal Professional Total Non stick cookware that has been reviewed in Cooks Illustrated and Consumer Report is currently available at Kohl's, Meijer and Shopko as well as their on-line retail web sites. You may also find this item through on line retailers such as amazon.com

Note: Our inventory levels have been low as a result of these reviews. However we do have shipments coming in regularly. With this in mind, retailers may be temporarily out of stock. If possible, you may want to consider per-ordering.

The T-Fal part numbers for this cookware will begin with either E938, E939 or E987.

The cookware has stainless steel base and can be used on all cook tops including an induction cook top

The cookware is available as either a 10 piece set or as individual fry pans in 8", 10.25" or 12.5" sizes.

T-fal Consumer Service

========================================

I ended up buying it from shopko.com since Amazon did not have it in stock. The item that I ordered (and received) is the exact part number that was reviewed by Cook's Illustrated.

All I can say is that Cook's was right. This pan has amazing non-stick properties. I've been using the pan for several months now on a daily basis (I'm on a carb-restricted diet, so I eat fried eggs for breakfast every morning) and the non-stick properties of this pan are simply amazing. No sticking. Clean-up is a breeze. I'm VERY satisfied with this pan and will not hesitate to purchase another when this one wears out (hey, nothing lasts forever).

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Lodge is my favorite cast iron label because it is well made and inexpensive. Now it even comes pre-seasoned, although it still requires some additional seasoning before it reaches top nonstick form. This can be done by baking it with oil or bacon/ham grease or just by using it to cook a few times. The more cast iron is used properly, the more nonstick it becomes. If one learns to change cooking habits, following usage and cleaning instructions, better results will be achieved in short order.

Unaware of the Teflon industry unethically hiding their toxicity reports from the public and the government for more than 20 years (not to mention the toxins they dumped into the environment), I raised my children on Teflon nonstick pans. None of my food ever turned out with the flavorful browned finish that cast iron provides, but I was lazy and I bought into the idea of the new conveniences. Now that I know Teflon is actually dangerous to not only our individual health but to the planet, I've replaced all of my Teflon with cast iron, bought cast iron for my young adult children, and I'm trying to help them learn to cook on it so they too will learn that it is not only better for their health, but it also produces superior texture and flavor.

I started by going back and remembering how my grandmother used hers. It is all she used until she died at 91-years-old. Her cookware is still entirely useable and has been divided up among relatives.

Grandmother cooked everything on cast iron, and she knew how to use pieces in multiple ways so that she required fewer of them. For example, she used her large fry pan to cook homemade pancakes by turning it upside down on the burner and using the bottom as a griddle! Because she kept an empty coffee can of recycled bacon and ham grease next to her stove (lard) and used it as her cooking oil, she never needed to re-season. Her pans were completely nonstick from all of the use. While most of us will not recycle meat grease and cook with it, we can do the same with the olive and vegetable oils we use.

A contemporary concern often expressed is that it must be unhealthy to clean pans without dishwashing detergent. I remind my children that their great-grandparents lived to just under and just over 90-years-old (neither died from a cancer) and never once washed their cookware with detergent. They used only hot water. Our entire family grew up eating Grandmother's cooking and none of us were sickened by it. Remembering that reminds me that much of our concern with hyper-cleanliness has been marketed to us so we will buy innumerable products we do not really need; products that actually have hurt overall health by inhibiting our opportunities to strengthen our immune systems, and now we have actually introduced too many antibacterial products into our environment as well. Grandmother did dry her pans by placing them over a hot burner and that will kill bacteria, but it is not necessary to dry cast iron that way. Because drying pans over a hot burner uses more energy, I towel dry mine and I've never been made sick by doing so.

Reasons to switch:

1. Food has better flavor and texture

2. No toxins in the air or in the food to worry about.

3. No dishwashing detergent used so it is better for the planet and for the wallet.

4. For good results, cooking with lower heat is required, which means less energy use and that also is better for the environment and the wallet.

5. Less expensive to purchase than nonstick considered "high quality" and much more durable so rarely does any of it need replacing. The same pans can be used by multiple generations. One more reason cast iron is better for the environment and our pocketbook.

6. Small amounts of healthy iron added to our diets without a mineral supplement in pill form.

7. Weight of pieces forces at least a little weight lifting every day which is better for our muscles, therefore our overall health, including contributing to staving off osteoporosis.

8. Because it is easier to wash right after use and needs to be dried right away, pans do not pile up cluttering the kitchen and hanging over our heads as a chore we are avoiding.

9. To stop rewarding the Teflon industry for lying to us with withheld toxicity reports as they sold us products that were actually slowly poisoning our children.

10. To stop rewarding the Teflon industry for dumping toxins into our waterways and releasing toxic gases into the air during the manufacturing process.

11. To hold cookware manufacturers, distributors, and retailers responsible and accountable for what they choose to market and sell to us.

Reasons to purchase Lodge brand:

1. Well made

2. Readily available

3. Inexpensive

4. For those who do not want to go to the store, it can be purchased from Amazon with free shipping.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Unlike some other reviewers who make candles/soap or work with lead, I don't have a recurring use case for needing a accurate, non-contact temperature readings.

Which doesn't mean this isn't great fun, and potentially very useful.

Here are some remotely measured temperature values (all Fahrenheit from around the house):

Freezer compartment (kitchen refrigerator/freezer): -10.3 degrees

Freezer compartment (garage refrigerator/freezer): 2.0 degrees

Refrigerator compartment (kitchen refrigerator/freezer): 38.8 degrees

Refrigerator compartment (garage refrigerator/freezer): 43.3 degrees

Dog's back (short hair, indoors): 88.1 degrees

Dog's belly (exposed skin): 92.3 degrees

Own cheek (interior): 98.4 degrees

Own skin (forearm): 91.2 degrees

Grass at dusk (ambient air temp: 77 degrees): 64 degrees

Asphalt driveway at dusk (after daytime high of 83 degrees): 78 degrees

No wonder the cat sleeps on the driveway.

All of these temperatures are where I would expect them to fall, and so I'm confident of the claimed "plus/minus 2 degrees (C) accuracy.

Unit ships with a 9V battery and a decent user guide.

Select with confidence.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I eat plain white rice every day and always use a Japanese rice cooker ($150). For years I have wanted to try the famous Japanese "Pressure" rice cooker ($450), but could not bring myself to spend that much on just plain white rice (how good can plain rice be that is worth $450?). I bought this one because it is a pressure rice cooker and could do other dishes like a regular pressure cooker (I figure if the rice coming from this pressure cooker does not taste better than my regular cooker, at least, I can use it as a regular pressure cooker, so no waste here.). The pros of this cooker are:

1. As a regular pressure cooker, it is much better than the conventional stove-top one. Very easy to use. Seals very well, no food smells before you open the lid. Turn off automatically, so if you forget and leave the house before it is done, there will be no explosion.

2. As a pressure rice cooker, this cooker is better than my $150 regular rice cooker. The white rice coming out of this cooker definitely is stickier than that from the regular cooker. It tastes as if you mixed sticky sweet rice into regular white rice. If anyone has tried the $450 Japanese pressure rice cooker (Zojirushi Induction Heating Pressure rice cooker), I still want to know if there is a difference (if there are people willing to spend $450 on a rice cooker, there must be a good reason.).

I would have given this cooker 5 stars if I had not found out the following:

The white rice cooked by this cooker looks grey. It seems that there is something coming off the stainless steel pot. You would not notice it unless you cook something white, like white rice. I have no prior experience on stainless steel pots. I am not sure if the problem is universal to all stainless steel pots. The grey color is annoying, but tasteless. I wonder if it is bad for health....

Updated -7-11-12:

Per suggestion of one viewer of my review, I contacted the company in Canada. Their customer service is excellent. The person who returned my call did some experiments with his Instant Pot cooker as well as a regular Japanese rice cooker using his white rice (a different brand from mine) and found no color difference. He then contacted his factory in China and sent me the following answer:

"All rice cooked with pressure over 70kpa (10psi) appears to be a little grey. This has nothing to do with stainless steel or taflon cooking pot, or bleaching impurities from the pot. Under high powered microscope, the cooked rice has pin holes which make them appears a little grey. The number of pin holes vary by the type of rice. Some rice appears to be more grey than others. To avoid rice being slightly grey, some Japaneses/Korean rice cookers use less than 70kpa pressure. We will also investigate introducing models allows lower pressure for rice cooking. Hope this assures you of the health concern."

I think this addresses my concern, so I have changed my rating to 5 stars.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I've waited a while for this review while I put the scrubber through a good workout. The other night I made beef stew in my cast iron skillet, and did two things wrong. I let the gravy reduce to the point that some of the veggies stuck to the bottom, and I didn't clean it right away. When I did go to clean it, all those stuck veggie pieces were nice and rock hard. Some hot water, a couple of minutes of not real vigorous scrubbing, and back to smooth and shiny again. I used to use a stiff plastic bristle brush and a plastic scrubbie to clean the pan. Both would get real grungy and were hard to clean. They are now gone. This chainmail scrubber is all I need.

I have found that the easiest way to use it is to pull the corners together so it forms a sort of ball. It is easier to direct and focus one's effort that way.

Edit 12/31/14: Just a quick addition. The instructions say to clean your pan while it is still warm. That's great, but make sure it isn't too warm - those metal links quickly pick up any heat from the pan and can get uncomfortably warm very quickly.

I read someplace in reviews that somebody got this set for $10 a while back. I paid twice that and have no qualms about it. They should last forever and if someone breaks 1 so what I have 9 more, then 8 more... until I'm the only one with a glass then I don't break my own stuff. Perfect. Everybody else can cup their hands under the sink if they're thirsty. Stop breaking my glasses.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I've had a chance to use this for three meals so far. I am happy with the build quality, the welds look good, the mesh of the screen seems higher quality than average meshes. I've used it for oven steaming in a 12" pan, and for a pizza idea we came up with last year for football season. I use a fairly wet pizza dough, and have found that my bottom crusts don't always get super nice and crusty. Using the Culina in conjunction with Lodge's Cast Iron big heavy pizza pan took care of that problem nicely. The little feet lift the pizza off the Lodge, but still allows all that heavy metal to radiate heat upward. I recommend a quick spray of cooking oil on the Culina and Lodge with an oil mist-er to make for easier cleanup. I attached two pictures showing the layout and air gap.of 3/4" between devices. Also, I found that the huge OXO silicone pancake flipper (good to 600F in the oven (!) works great as an easy to handle and store in a drawer quickee pizza slider.Since we do A LOT of pizza during sports season, It's back to Amazon to buy a second set of the Culina and Lodge pizza combo.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I ordered the blue Bentgo Kids and I like the 2 tone colors. The blue is nicer than the standard Bentgo Box blue. The compartments are nicely sized, just perfect for my kindergardener. Before I let my son use it, I tested the box by putting liquids (water) into some of the compartments, lock it and then put it sideways (standing up). Amazingly, no water came out. Therefore it passed my test and I'm sured that the lunch foods will not end up in my son's backpack. Primary reason for my testing is because the size of this box is pretty large and none of the lunch bags I have at home fits this box.

The next day is I put some Cheetos in a small compartment and packed piping hot white rice & some meat in the main (largest) compartment. I asked my son to pay attention whether the Cheetos became soggy after a few hours. When he came home, he stated that his Cheetos still crunchy! So, good job for making sure no steam or liquids come out from each compartment.

The only reason I didn't give a rating of 5 is because the box doesn't come with utensils nor does it have designated space to store utensils. Thus, I had to figure out a way to pack utensils separately while keeping it close/together with the lunch box itself.

A brief video to show the machine, coffee compartment, water tank, making coffee, and emptying the grounds and drip trays.

We really love this machine because we love great coffee but we don't make frothy milk drinks. This machine produces very, very good coffee from scratch at the push of a button, automatically grinding the beans pumping through hot water and dumping out the "puck" of coffee grounds into the internal bin. It's a nice compact size and fits easily on a counter under the cabinets.

We bought this to replace another Jura machine we have had for the past 10 years, which after many thousands of cups of coffee started to leak and get a bit temperamental. The Micro ENA-1 is smaller and cheaper than that older model, but produces the same great (maybe even greater) coffee.

review

I've been through quite a few kitchen scales throughout all the years I've been working. I've had expensive ones and cheap ones but this particular scale by Gurin blows them all away. For its price, this scale is phenomenal in terms of quality and accuracy and definitely my favorite.

style/looks - Though this wasnt at the top of my priority when shopping for a scale, this scale does have a very nice appeal. the entire top portion of this scale is a one piece tempered glass surface so its really compact. It appears that the material under the glass is black so it has a black glossy/shine look on the surface. One thing I should note is that since the top is all glass, it is easy to get finger prints on it, but at the same time, since it is all smooth glass, its very easy to clean. Another thing I should note is that the whole glass top acts as the weighing platform so its really easy to weigh large objects without a problems.

Its also very thin; I'd say about the same thickness as an iPhone. Since the shape of this scale is thin, its really convenient to store anywhere, or even take around with you in a bag or purse.

other features - The screen that displays the weight is quite spacious and backlit so its very easy to read at a glance. Another thing that I had noticed over the years with other scales is sometimes, the screen is too hard to read, whether it be no backlight, poor viewing angle, or a weird shape that makes it hard to read the screen with a large bowl on it. However, this scale is very easy to read in any situation. Also, the buttons on this scale are touch sensitive, meaning you literally just tap your fingers against the glass surface to operate it. I find this to be very convenient in many ways, especially since there are no grooves for physical buttons, its easier to clean or wipe down.

Also, batteries are included ( 2 button cells), which is always a plus.

Vinturi Essential Wine Aerator

Product Description

Style Name: Essential Red

Red wine needs to breathe to allow it to open up, release its intended aromas, and of course, make it taste better. Vinturi's patent pending design speeds up this process by instantly aerating with ease and convenience. It delivers recognizable improvements immediately: better bouquet, enhanced flavors and smoother finish. Perfect aeration in the time it takes to pour a glass. It couldn't be easier. Comes with a no-drip stand. Made of acrylic. Aerator and stand are dishwasher safe. The glossy, clear acrylic is elegant and clean. But do note that there are two slight fold lines that extend upward from each air hole. These are normal. During manufacturing, material folds around rods and wraps back, and this causes the fold lines.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

First of all, if you are a wine drinker, get this. It works, or else I've been taken by the psychology of it. I first encountered it at the Sterling winery in California. Since we were joining the "club", we got quasi-VIP treatment, which included a demo of this device on a newly opened bottle of wine (yes, the Sterling wine store had them for sale for $45). Wine was poured into one glass from the bottle, and another through the Vinturi. It clearly made a difference in aroma and taste. We've since done a couple of blind tests, and picked the aerated wine every time.

Now, let me save you a couple bucks. The basic device includes a small rubber stand for storing the Vinturi. It is just fine. The upgraded 6-piece set includes a less-than-useful stand. It is not attractive enough to leave on display, so it's another bulky thing to store. Also, we found that our wine glasses were either too short--and we got spashing--or they were too tall and wouldn't fit. Plus, the stand holds the Vinturi perfectly vertical, which is contrary to the included instructions, which tell you to tip it slightly to the side.

So, fellow wine drinkers, get the $25.47 model, and you'll be quite pleased. Don't waste your money on the six-piece version with the stand.
