review

I just received my new unit. We are using it for the first time right now. This report is to note details of purchase and first use.

1: It was packaged good enough to survive UPS undamaged: Great job Amazon!

2: Directions for use (the instructions pages), are few and nearly usless. Since they have to put them into French & Spanish as well as English, I guess they wanted to keep it VERY short.

3: It does not say this in the listing, but it has about a 24 inch cord. This keeps their costs down: if the cord was any longer the cord would probably not be heavy enough for the load?

4: It LOOKs great! I love the features of the well made see through top, the removable cooking dish, and the keep warm setting. Nice too that there are NO electronics to screw up: electronics hate heat and moisture..... which this would provide in spades of course.

5: It does have the wire lid holder on the back, but it does NOT have a seal, a stretch lid latch, nor an indicator lamp on the front to say that it is turned on or not. I guess all of those items (except the indicator lamp) must be bought separately.

6: I saw several listed "8 Qt Pots" where people were very disappointed that they were not 8 Qt at, all but barely made a 7 Qt at best. This unit IS an 8 Qt up to the top lid edge......and if you needed a large one, you will love it's size! Real life use? (NOTES: You never want fill any pot to the very top edge, it will obviously boil over and make a MESS! So,....so make it a solid 7.5 qt? :-)) It is still a BIG pot.

Now that I have this, and assuming that it does cook as well as others have said it would, would I buy it again? Absolutely! Enjoy!

UPDATE on 03 Nov.2012: We have very much enjoyed using this cooker: It works very well. One thing I did not count on was how heavy the removable washable interior cook pot really is. I had no problem with it, but today, my wife just could not hang on and broke it: it gets very slippery when ever it is wet or soapy! A new pot is $25 + shipping= cost new. So, the only way to go is just buy another new one I guess. I looked around carefully, and anything from 5.5 qt up through 8.5 qt show a solid serious weight of 15 to 20#, so the pot is going to be "heavy" in all of them. I am so glad I did not buy a $100+ type priced unit, at this rate of 1 per 13 months..... that could get expensive. (humor)

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I tried out this coffee because very few fair trade & organic subscribe and save options out there and it was almost half the price of Coffee People, Tree Hugger, K-Cup Portion Pack for Keurig K-Cup Brewers (Pack of 50) or Green Mountain Coffee, Colombian Fair Trade Select K-Cup Portion Pack for Keurig Brewers, 50 count when ordered through Subscribe & Save. That said, the truly price sensitive among us will point out that San Francisco Bay 100% Organic Coffee Rainforest Blend Whole Bean 3 Lbs allows you to make a whole pot of coffee for about the same price, or use a MyCup/eKobrew if you still are in love with the single cup thing. (I'm forbidden from using MyCups because I can't seem to use them without getting some coffee grounds all over the place and my wife considers coffee grounds on the floor to be grounds for divorce.)

First, the actual cups themselves are fascinating. I think they are able to get the lower price because they are using a K-Cup compatible packaging without actually having to pay a licensing fee to Green Mountain (which has a patent expiring in late 2012). Green Mountain is apparently suing them for infringement, so that may end up having an effect.

These alternate cups are smaller and I suspect a bit more environmentally friendly than K-Cups, but not by a huge amount. They have coffee filters holding the beans in, instead of plastic. The downside of this is that they can dry out, so they come in plastic bags holding a six or so each. The filters don't work quite as well as K-Cups, so I have ocassionally found some grounds in my coffee. It's not a huge deal to me, but might be for you.

They also advertise that it works in various non-Keurig systems, but I was a Keurig early adopter so I haven't tried any of the others.

Okay, for the coffee taste test, this stuff is STRONG. All the fair trade, organic, eco-friendly, hippiesh vibe (complete with a photo on the side of the box of the whole extended family smiling in front of rustic commune looking backdrop) does not prepare you for this. This is coffee that drinks you back. It's smooth without tasting burnt or overly bitter, but full-bodied doesn't really begin to describe it, unless that body was of a heavyweight boxer... and this coffee was a boxer, it would be Joe Frazier. If this coffee was a spaceship, it would be the Death Star. This isn't some coffee that gently wakes you up after being mixed with foamed milk and maybe a shot of flavored corn syrup, this is coffee that wakes you up by beating you over the head and shouting at you like the Drill Instructor from Full Metal Jacket.

Okay, so maybe I'm a bit jacked up from my two HUGE mugs this morning, but this stuff has the caffeine to back up that taste, and with a newborn and a toddler, it's the only thing that gets me moving at this-clock-has-to-be-broken-it-can't-really-be-that-early AM. And keeps me moving, because it leaves me with a mild case of the shakes. Three will have me wired all day.

So after singing the praises of this coffee, why would I rate it only four stars? As much as I'm a huge fan of this coffee, my wife won't even go near the stuff... for precisely the reasons I listed above. She'll stick to her sweet donut shop concoctions. So YMMV.

This brush works great for cleaning my grill. The bristles are heavy duty and get the job done better than anything I have used before. The handle is comfortable and the whole thing feels well-made and sturdy. I also like how the brush itself is not that hard to clean. Even after using it on a messy grill, the brush just washes right off. Very nice product, easy to use and does a great job.

I could not tell from the product image but the pot is actually very shiny both inside and out. (I thought it had frosted outer surface.) It is also a very light-weight pot.

I am using it to cook soup, rice, stew, etc. and it just works perfect. As it is stated in the product features, this pot heats very quickly and it is easy to clean. To my surprise, the product package had a pitcture of Lidia Bastianich (my favorite Italian cooking show hostess), meaning she recommends it too.

Lastly, the price was good so I am very happy with this pot!

UPDATE on 1/24/2011

I am still using this pot!

There are tons of wears from 3 years daily use but it is just doing great.

I was so right about this pot.

I imagine most people need to know two things about this mug.

1) It really is a terrific insulator. Your coffee will be hot all morning, and probably into the afternoon with this mug. I have found coffee hot 5 hours after I poured it. Hot.

2) It doesn't leak. Yeah, that's what they promise, but the surprise is that the clever and more importantly well constructed lid does not leak. You could store it upside down in your important files cabinet if you needed to. It's a great mug.

Also, I think it looks cool. It fits my cupholder in my truck. It's easy to clean. Those are all nice too.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Most problems with mugs I have tried in the past are solved in this product. This mug comes with a tight sealing lid so that you can put this mug with hot drink in a brief case upside down and run to a subway station. No spilling, and this product is better than a plain Saran Wrap solution. The sipping lid has a deeply recessed bottom where you have a hole for liquid to come out. That is, the spill risk is very low even in pitching and rolling Boston's subway. So, you rarely need to use the sealing lid unless you want to brew tea in it or put the mug in a backpack. (See the other review to learn how to brew tea in it.) Also because of this deeply recessed sipping lid, this mug is easier to use spill-free while laying on a sofa or maybe even on a bed with a high pillow!

Lack of handle presents little inconvenience at any situation I've used this mug. A both handed person like myself needs not worry which way to put the mug, which way to put the sipping lid, and which hand to hold the mug. It's very left hand friendly, more so than having two landles on each side.

If criticism is an obligatory part of the reiview, I offer a few. This mug's tea leaf strainer is given enough space for most loose teas, but it is not enough for some herbal infusions, particularly whole dried preparation of chamomile flower. This mug's advertised capacity is 11 ounces, but the line specifying the maximum fluid level is actually 275ml (10 ounces). I wonder if they could make it a bit taller for increased true drink capacity and enough space for chamomile to expand. The leakproof lids depend on silicon gaskets thus they should not be cleaned in a dishwasher, a convenience requirement.

Overall, this mug is slim, tall, leakproof, beautiful design, and very functional and compact. The quality of tea made in this mug is as good as ones made in tea pot as long as the leaf is of good quality (sentimental value not included). The diameter of the mug at its widest (around lid) is only 75mm (3in) so it will fit in most briefcases together with a book and couple manila folders. I just wish it was 8.5in tall and 350ml capacity. Unlike so many poorly designed products, you know this one was designed by designers and engineers who love tea and coffee.

* * *

I wrote this original review quite some time ago, but I thought to add that I now own three of this product, and I still use this product daily (home, office, travel) and I still think this mug is totally awesome for people who appreciate high quality tea. STILL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED in 2010.

Addendum May 2011.

Most common question I get is how best to clean the inside of the tea mug when it gets all browned. The answer: fill the tea mug with hot tap water, dissolve a teaspoon full of oxygen bleach powder (sodium percarbonate aka Oxyclean), attach the lid and the cap, gently shake a few times, and loosen the cap immediately. Leave it in the sink for 10 to 20 minutes. Make sure the lid is attached loosely, and never tightly. Dump the stuff, rinse it with water, and you're done. Chlorine bleach (Chlorox) will do the job just as well, but you'll have to deal with the bleach odor for a few days. Oxygen bleach leaves no odor, but it forms oxygen gas, which builds up the pressure inside and explode the lid, if left attached tightly (I've done that!). That's why I emphasized to loosen the lid when leaving it in the sink.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

This thermos did its job though I was somewhat annoyed because it could have easily been better. This review is based on one month of direct experience. I will discuss why I bought it, the good points then the bad.

I wanted to escape the increasing price at my workplace cafeteria, have more control over what I eat, avoid Chinese-made products if possible and set a good example caring for the environment. I wanted to take food (not coffee) so I needed a wide mouth that could accommodate a spoon. I wanted a large capacity because I'm a big eater and also envisioned bringing hot/cold drink treats for the whole family when we go hiking. Excellent insulation was an important criterion, just in case I needed it.

There were scant reviews on this particular product but the reviews for the Thermos brand were generally better than the Stanley brand. Many reviews of Stanley thermos mentioned how incredible they used to be but indicated prevailing reliability problem since "Made in China" appeared on their products. I considered other products that had higher insulation ratings, but there were none with better insulation rating and was a large capacity wide-mouth.

This Singapore-made Thermos appeared well made. The weld was quite clean and smooth compared to the welds in the Stanley brand. The plastic appeared to be of excellent quality.

The top was closed by a stopper with a pouring spout. A plastic bowl covers it loosely. Then the outer plastic/metal screw-top holds the bowl in place. None of the lids require heavy tightening to close. The stopper is very air tight and capable of containing surprising high pressure. Once, the pressure was so high that when I opened it, the puff of escaping air dislodged the silicone rubber o-ring. (The o-ring was easily to re-install.)

Because the stopper did not require heavy tightening, I was afraid the seal was not good and may spill the contents. This has not happened and I don't think it will.

When I put in boiling hot soup, the soup is plenty hot 6 hours later, with or without preheating the thermos. I took hot pasta once, and it was just warm after 6 hours (without preheating). (Soup has higher heat content, so it took more heat loss to lower the temperature. And the more food you put in the thermos, the slower the temperature will drop.) The claimed 12-hour rating clearly did not apply to pasta in the thermos.

The most severe test for the insulation was when I put boiling hot soup in at 9:30 pm. At 7am, it was plenty hot when I took a third out for breakfast. At 3pm, when I had the rest for lunch, the soup was hot enough to enjoy but no hotter. Based on this single experience, I would that the 12-hour heat rating was valid for soup in the thermos.

Now, the things I did not like.

Although the walls were very well insulated, the top was not. The stopper had no insulation. I would have like to see a layer of vacuum in the stopper. Instead, the stopper had a nice pouring spout, which I never use because it doesn't work for soup. When closed, I noticed that the top of the thermos was surprisingly warm to the touch, indicating that virtually all heat loss came through the top. I would have happily paid more for a better insulated stopper, so I my pasta would stay hot longer than 6 hours.

There are 2 little holes in the bottom (perhaps for screws attaching the plastic base to the steel body). These holes took in water (probably when I washed the thermos) and leaked it a messy puddle on my desk the next day. If the holes were wider and shallower, this would not have happened.

Thermos suggested using the outer lid as a bowl. The problem with this that this lid is not tight fitting, so residual food in the bowl could leak out.

Some may point out that I would get better performance if I preheated the thermos with hot water. I find doing that to be annoying. Using up the energy to heat water when you don't really intend to use it seems wrong to me. It's also a bad way to deal with our severe water shortage. Most of all, I want to set a good example for my kids.

I think this product is very good overall and am very happy with it. I would have paid more for an insulating stopper. In the month I've had it, it has almost paid for itself, I think.

This is a first, so I'm glad to be reviewing this product which makes it easy. I have tested (and yes, bought-just ask my wife) well over a dozen various insulated containers for use in the car. No I'm not one of those people who walk around constantly drinking (or hydrating). I use it almost exclusively in my car. It's simple, I want the liquid to stay hot, I want to be able to operate it with one hand, and I don't want it to spill or leak. This is the only product that does that and it does it well. I have given it as a gift to at least a half dozen people and since they are relatives there's no more critical an audience. They agree. Enough said.

One taste was all it took for me. I tried Lavazza at a local coffee house in Denver and really enjoyed the taste. No bitterness at all. Very full flavored coffee.

I came across this as the word "Crema" caught my eye. Now I am ordering it using the subscribe and save. It is running me $17.41 for every order and that's with free 2 day shipping because of the Prime Membership.

Each brick lasts about 10 days for 2 people drinking 6 cups of coffee every morning. I use 1 tablespoon coffee for every 6 ounces of water brewed in a Target Michael Graves design automatic drip coffeemaker. The "Flavor" button really brings it out in this coffee. I love my coffee with half and half and it really seems to compliment it well.

The packages are vacuumed sealed and take up very little space. It really is a 5 star coffee.

review

I have had my platinum Vita-Mix 1363 CIA (Culinary Institute of America) model blender for just over a month. So far, I am loving it! I have definitely increased my consumption of fruits and vegetables since getting it. I start most mornings off with a smoothie now. I throw in whatever fruit is in season (I love berries, but I've used peaches, nectarines, plums, grapes, apples, bananas and various frozen fruits), a scoop or two of protein powder, milk or water, a couple handfuls of fresh spinach, a couple handfuls of ice and sweetener if needed. Surprisingly, the spinach doesn't noticeably change the flavor, but it does boost the nutritional content of the smoothie. In less than 10 minutes I can have my smoothie made, poured into a "to go" cup and have the machine all clean (just add warm water and a couple drops of dish soap- turn it on for 30 seconds, then empty and rinse the container). The smoothies always turn out 100% smooth- berry seeds, apple seeds, ice and other hard bits are totally pulverized and drinkable. I've made great low-cal salad dressings using fresh herbs, garlic, low fat cottage cheese, a splash of milk and salt (if you prefer, you could use Ranch dressing mix with cottage cheese and milk). I made a very satisfying tomato soup with home grown tomatoes, fresh basil, garlic, onion and salt. I've made great blended piƱa coladas, too! I'm having a lot of fun experimenting with different recipes. Because the Vita-Mix processes foods quickly, I'm actually finding that I'm making healthier eating choices. It's faster for me to put together a salad with pre-washed greens, veggies and homemade dressing than it is to go to the nearest fast food restaurant... and in the end, it's more satisfying and a LOT healthier. Yes, this is an expensive machine, but I think it will pay for itself within the first two years by reducing my spending on going out to eat.

This is a heavy-duty machine. It is loud when it's in use, but generally you won't need to run the machine for more than a couple minutes at a time. This is definitely a professional quality machine and will yield professional quality results. A regular home blender cannot compare!

The Vita-Mix 1363 CIA model and the Vita-Mix 5200 model are essentially the same machine. The CIA model has some different color choices and comes with a HUGE recipe book called "Create", a smaller "recipes and techniques" booklet and an hour long cooking class DVD. The 5200 model includes a different booklet and DVD. Both have the same 7-year warranty. If the color of the machine and the recipe book don't matter to you, save yourself some $$$ and go for the 5200 model instead.

**Update June 1, 2012: Nearly 3 years after my original purchase I am still loving my Vita-Mix. It still gets used several times a week (sometimes multiple times in a day). It's still a great machine and has given me absolutely no problems. For me, it has definitely been a worthwhile investment!

I compared the 18 cup Dark Magic (from Target) to the 50 cup Dark Magic(from Amazon), since the labeling and k-cup is markedly different. The coffee did not taste as rich, so I became more curious.

I opened the k-cups to find the 50 cup filters have a visible cross hatch pattern, as compared to a dense firm paper style. I used a microscope to see the difference in density, as well. The weave of the fibers of the 50 pack is not as closely bound.

The coffee granules are finer in the 18 cup, giving the coffee a different texture on the fingers. The 50 pack ground coffee appeared 50%-100% larger under the microscope.

I hope that Keurig can shed some light on my findings! I have photos I can submit. I notice amazon is out of stock, currently. Perhaps, Keurig is looking into the matter.

When we noticed our non-stick pans were losing their non-stick (into ours and our childrens food) we decided it was time to look at the alternative to teflon and non-stick coating. We waffled over whether to go cast iron or stainless. I was worried about cooking with stainless because of the sticking issue but decided to bite the bullet and went ahead and purchased these. I have to say, we LOVE them! My husband is able to make the most amazing omelettes without leaving half of it behind. I haven't had much trouble with sticking at all. Scrambled eggs and hash browns seem to be the worst so far and with 15 mins of soaking the pans in water I am able to just scrub them clean with my nylon scrubby sponge. They are tough and durable and seem to put up with alot of use. We aren't occasional cookers, as a family of five these pots and pans get used daily. The price is right but dont let it fool you! Can't say enough.

I bought three of these canisters in the 1 gallon size and another one in a smaller size. I use them on my countertop for two kinds of flour and two kinds of sugar. I searched all over to find a canister that could hold an entire 5 lb. bag of flour, and the 1 gallon size does. These canisters look lovely on my counter.

Pros

Holds an entire bag of flour or sugar

Attractive

Mouth is wide enough to easily scoop with a measuring cup

Glass, not plastic (I don't like storing food in plastic if I can help it)

Inexpensive

Cons

No gasket; not airtight

Highly breakable

I would not have thought it was possible to break these very easily, as they seem to be very thick, but I was removing the lid from one of them, knocked it against the mouth of the canister, and sent tiny shards of glass spraying all over my counter and into my sugar. As it was impossible to tell which were grains of sugar and which were pieces of glass, I had to dump the whole thing. I know this was my mistake and not the fault of the product (it IS glass after all, which I am fully aware of) but just be extra careful not to knock the lid against the jar. I really wish they had plastic or rubber gaskets to make them airtight. I use up my flour and sugar quite quickly, but I can see how it might be an issue for someone who takes more than 2-3 weeks to use a full bag of flour. You could always lay a piece of plastic wrap over the opening before fitting the lid into place to keep things fresh.

review

I got a Keurig machine for the first time last year and it came with an assortment of different flavored K-cups. I was underwhelmed at most of them, but there were a few that were good enough to convince me that my Keurig COULD make an exceptional cup of coffee. My search for the best K-cups was on.

When I first saw this K-cup flavor on Amazon, I thought it sounded disgusting! I don't even like blueberries especially and never eat them except in a blueberry muffin. However, after reading the glowing reviews, I ordered a box.

This stuff is like crack! I'm telling you, it takes K-cups to a whole different level. The smell fills the kitchen as it's brewing. It's not a dark roast - it's more of a city roast and is perfectly smooth without any hint of bitterness. The blueberry taste and aroma is not overpowering, but perfectly compliments the coffee.

You can use the 12 oz setting and still get a full, rich cup of coffee. I use the 8 or 10 oz settings when I need a jolt of java goodness on the run.

Here's a tip - if you want the most decadent cup of coffee ever, add a little heavy cream. Half and Half is also good, but you owe it to yourself to try it with cream just once. It's like a just-baked blueberry muffin and a cup of coffee all in one sip. I always drank my coffee black but with this flavor, the cream is just too good to pass on. I serve it to my guests with the heavy cream and everyone raves that it's the best cup of coffee they've ever had.

If you have a Keurig, you NEED this Wild Mountain Blueberry flavor.

I have been using Brita filters for over six years now and I have nothing but the best to say about them. Living in a part of the country where the tap water contains impurities resulting in poor taste, at first I resorted to bottled water. Besides being hard on the old wallet, I found that some brands had a burnt aftertaste to them. So I tried Brita. I was amazed at how it improved the taste of ordinary tap water. It tasted better than some bottled water I had been purchasing and it was crystal clear. I have been using Brita ever since. The only drawback initially is the cost of the pitcher, but once you have it the only other cost are the filters that are readily available at most stores. Each filter lasts about 40 gallons, which translates into getting bottled water quality for seventeen cents per gallon.
