I bought the stainless steel pineapple slicer because I had been given the plastic model. The plastic slicer did a very nice job, but I knew it wasn't going to last very long. However, for some reason the steel version is smaller than the plastic model, and as a result, the core often isn't completely cut out, resulting in some tough pieces attached to each slice. Also, since it doesn't slice as wide a diameter as the plastic model, I am forced to manually trim the pineapple that the cutter failed to remove from the outer skin, in order to reduce waste. However, the steel slicer cuts much easier than the plastic model because it's edge is much sharper. I am very disappointed with the steel model, especially since it costs 2 1/2 times as much as the plastic model.

I purchased a peeler similar to this one about 15 years ago, it finally bit the dust last month. I couldn't find a replacement in any of the retailers so I settled for the typical peeler every kitchen place sells. I paid more money for a piece of garbage that was dull and made peeling potatoes and carrots impossible. I finally found the Swiss Rex veggie peeler on line (which is the same one I originally had), purchased it for way less that the one I bought which was useless. I got it within one week and it works just as well as the one I originally had. Why people settle for the typical store bought ones, I don't know...

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I just cooked a thick ribeye steak using this grill. It's the first thing that I have cooked on it. Similar to a cast iron frying pan that I have, this generates a lot of "smoke". I had to take the battery out of my smoke detector, and open windows. I think I cooked it at a slightly higher temperature than I needed to. If smoke is a problem, think twice about buying this.

The result is the best steak I have ever cooked indoors. It beats any electric grill I have ever used, and it beats the George Foreman grill hands down. I would say that the results are almost restaurant quality. I look forward to cooking hamburgers within the next day or so.

I think this would work better with slightly less thick cuts of meat. Even at high heat it took longer than it would have taken on a grill. During the cooking I put a metal lid over the pan to control splattering.

I think it will be a breeze to clean. Oiling it after cleaning, with the ridges, will be a little more work than for smoother surfaces.

Because the ridges are so high, the grill does a great job of cooking away from the fat, and probably (my guess) does even a better job than the George Foreman grill in that regard.

Pans like this pay for themselves. This pan is about the cost of a dinner for two, and it will result in less eating out.

Update: I cleaned the pan after making the steak. It was more difficult to clean than other cast iron pans due to the ridges, however, I think I need to find a different tool to clean it with. Someone recommended a grill pad or brush. Also, I usually put the pan over enough heat to evaporate any water from cleaning, and then apply a thin amount of oil. This was also harder. I think it will get better with practice. In any case, the results were worth it.

I will be trying burgers and pork chops soon, so stay tuned!

Update: I cooked pork chops tonight on this grill, and they are the best pork chops I have ever had in my life. I let the pan heat up, and usually also have the electric burner on high heat when adding the meat. I then turn it down a bit. The cast iron doesn't cool off, and it sears the juices in. I have found that a metal cover over the grill works well to keep in splatters and heat. Another thing that is helpful is a temperature fork, which told me tonight that the chops were at 180 degrees, otherwise I would have overcooked them.

This is by far the best money that I have spent on cooking equipment, and it will definitely save a lot of $$$ because I will treat myself to excellent home-cooked meals more often.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I received an advance copy of this electric pressure cooker so I could film an instructional and recipe videos for Instant Pot. I was all set to buy myself a yogurt maker for Christmas and this cooker ruined my plans - in a good way!

Instant Pot DUO has all of the things I look for in an electric pressure cooker: stainless steel cooking surface, browning function (at three temperatures), dual pressure settings (high and low pressure), manual programming and delay feature. Additional functions include Rice Cooker, Slow Cooker (low, medium and high settings), Steamer and Yogurt maker.

I rarely use the built-in cooking programs (preferring to put the timing in myself with the manual setting button), but for those who do this cooker also has buttons for Soup, Bean/Chili, Meat/Stew, Chicken, Multi-grains and Porridge.

I'm only giving this cooker four out of five stars because although the stainless steel cooking surface is FANTASTIC compared to non-stick surfaces, it has a thin aluminum disk to distribute heat evenly only at the bottom of the cooking insert. This means that my favorite pressure cooker pasta and tomato sauce recipe that works on stove top pressure cookers or electrics with a non-stick insert will scorch in this one. Not making ONE recipe is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of not having non-stick coating and chemichals peeling off into dinner. On the plus side, the stainless steel surface REALLY browns meat - and that's a huge advantage over non-stick liners that generally prevent foods from browning well. The stainless steel insert is rugged and I don't have to worry about pressure cooking any sharp foods or using special utensils. Those who prefer the convenience of a non-stick insert can order one seperately from manufacturer.

Another nice touch is that you can rest the lid open, by inserting a tab in the handle. Electric pressure cooker lids tend to collect more condensation than stove-top models and hide them in their nooks and crannies. This means that you need to be extra careful when removing the lid to ensure the hot water does not burn you, it also means that if you rest the lid on the counter you're going to get a sizable puddle. Here, you just lift the lid, and lock it in the handle - the condensation drains into the lip of the pressure cooker and into the condensation cup in the back of the cooker.

My son attends after-school activities so twice a week we come home late and hungry. Instead of bringing home take-out and coming home even later I load-up the Instant Pot with all of the ingredients to make dinner before leaving the house and set the delay timer. If we're later than planned, Instant Pot automatically switches to "keep warm" so no matter what time we all finally get home - a healthy dinner for four is hot, ready and waiting. Our favorite is the spicy pressure cooker chickpea curry with steamed brown rice ([...] I serve that with refreshing plops of home-made yogurt.

After pressure cooking, my favorite feature is the yogurt function. Unlike most yogurt makers where you're limited to making as much yogurt as will fit in little jars - Instant Pot DUO gives you a choice. You can either make nearly a gallon of yogurt directly in the stainless steel cooking insert or use your own jars (of any size that will fit). Just like a conventional yogurt maker, you can set the timing of the program, too. It defaults to 8 hours, but you can choose more or less time depending on the thickness and tartness desired.

My family consumes a lot of yogurt (we use it in place of sour cream and milk in most recipes, plus eat it straight with a dab of home-made jam) and thanks to this Instant Pot I can now make a week's worth of yogurt overnight.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) Mavea Water Filters (for Brita Systems) are a direct replacement for Brita's. They look a little different but fit the regular Brita pitcher. The differences are minor and in favor of Mavea.

1. Cheaper (of course, prices on Amazon go up and down all the time)

2. A little less fuss. Presoaking takes less than a minute instead 15.

3. No annoying specks of carbon floating around - Mavea has an extra liner in the top of the filter to trap those. Because of that, you can add water faster without worrying about forcing out carbon specks.

Same capacity. 128 40oz uses for both brands.

Allegedly, Mavea has some silver in its filter for anti-bacteria. I can't vouch for that.

I cracked open a Mavea and a Britta. The carbon stuff on the inside looked similar.

Tasted water filtered by both a Mavea and a Britta. Tasted the same.

So, if you can save money with the Mavea, go for it.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

If you want to STORE food in ball/mason jars, rather than CANNING food, you NEED these.

Here's why:

The two part metal lids & caps that come with the Ball jars are for *CANNING*. These are NOT DESIGNED to be AIR TIGHT! The act of *canning* (pressure cooker, etc) creates a vacuum which seals the metal lid to the jar - the screw part is optional and is to simply hold the metal lid IN PLACE in case the canning fails. They are designed like that so that if the canning process is somehow faulty, and bacteria forms inside the jar, the lid will let the gases escape without making the jar EXPLODE. If you fill a jar up with WATER and put one of these metal lid/screw combos on it, and put it on its side, in a short time you will see it is NOT air or even water tight without a vacuum.

Now, you DO need the metal lids for canning, of course, and also if you're using one of those vacuum sealers with the jar attachment like the FoodSaver (which I recommend).

BUT YOU ALSO NEED THESE PLASTIC LIDS for storing anything else you want in the very handy classic ball/mason jars. The plastic lids ARE water and air tight - so they're perfect for medium-term storage of cereal, cookies, noodles, rice, etc.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Howdy! I've bought many orders of the San Fran Bay Breakfast Blend coffee and I must say that I have ZERO complaints. No bugs (as described by other ads) and I personally think the coffee is quite good. For the price, you really can't beat 80 k-cups for only $29 or $27.55 if you select the subscription option.

This particular blend is perfect as it's not weak, but its strong enough for me as I enjoy a bold flavor coffee without that burnt/French roast flavor. To give you an idea of their coffee flavor "strength", this Breakfast Blend is stronger than any of the Green Mountain offerings (except the French Roast) but slightly less bold than a Newman's Own "Medium Roast Coffee Extra Bold". Hopefully that will give you an idea of where this coffee stands on a strength scale.

As others have mentioned, the big difference is in the k-cups. They're not your standard completely-enveloped-in-plastic design, there is a top and the bottom is an open filter. Still, not a problem as each box includes a small container to keep your k-cups fresh. There are about 10 sealed bags per box, each bag contains 8 k-cups. Once I open a bag, I throw the other 7 unused k-cups in my plastic "stay fresh" container.

Work well and there's an AMAZINGLY enjoyable coffee aroma that fills my office whenever I open the stay fresh container. Tasty and perfect for coffee time. I like it and I think these less wasteful containers are a better deal than anything at Costco or other big warehouse stores.

I like it so much that my coworkers and regularly order (via the Amazon sub service) these k-cups every 2 months. Good stuff and even if you're not sure, it's a small cost to try something new. BTW, of all the coffee we've ordered from San Fran Bay, none of our orders have ever contains bugs or stale coffee.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

My refurb unit came just like new - I couldn't tell one bit of difference. Here is the review I wrote on the main page for this unit (new model, not refurb page). I wanted to review it both places to help as many people as possible. I know it is a big decision on which model to get - at least it was for me:

With over 600 reviews, you probably don't need just another one to tell you this machine is a powerhouse so I'll try to stick to the particular features which impressed me. First, I started juicing regularly over a year ago. I had purchased a Jack LaLanne ProJuicer at Big Lots for about eighty dollars. So, I started using it. While it lasted over a year, it was only around 300 watts. I found cleanup was laborious for the one cup of juice I would get. Also, the juice spout was lower so I had to use a small cup. If I wanted to make a lot of juice (to make it worth the cleanup), I had to dump the small cup into a pitcher and repeat (many times). When I did make a big batch, the overheat motor feature would kick in and I would have to stop to wait for it to cool. It did last me for quite a while but was less than ideal for someone who juices regularly. I really researched and came to Breville. When I looked at the highest end model, it didn't seem to have much more wattage or positive reviews for the money. I definitely wanted high wattage. I got this one in a refurb model so I saved about seventy dollars. That made the deal for me - 900 watts of power PLUS a small increase over the base model. I could not be happier.

Here are the key features for me:

1. I love the spout. It is higher up so you can fit most cups under it - not just the dinky ones. There is a spout to use with the pitcher (more on that later) and an attachment for regular cups. Much less mess because of this little feature.

2. I love the pitcher. The pitcher is made to hook on to the spout so there is virtually no mess! Plus, I can measure how much juice I have made since the measurement marks are on the side of the pitcher. The pitcher also has a foam reducer so, when you pour your juice, the foam doesn't come out (as opposed to just using a cup which has all the foam on top when you drink).

3. Clear spinner and top: I can see how much pulp is building up so I don't have to guess when to change it. I ordered those small compost bags so everything goes right in there and cleanup is a cinch.

4. Brush: The brush that comes with it can be used for a number of things. Most notably, it is great at cleaning the blade.

5. Spinning blade: No more special tools - this thing is held on by a magnet and comes on and off for cleaning but stays tight for spinning.

6. Multiple speeds: I make mean green juice and get so much more out of my kale and apples. I can switch speeds to accommodate both. It makes a difference.

7. Large shoot: My husband bought me small green apples. I can pitch the entire apple in the shoot. It is marvelous. I don't have to worry about even cutting it.

8. POWER: Of course, at 3 times the power of my LaLanne, it is a powerhouse! I feel like I am playing fruit ninja when the produce splats the side and the juice comes pouring out. It is fast and powerful.

So, those are my favorite features. If I had known this machine was out there, I would have changed over a year ago. And, for me, the refurb was good as new at a greatly reduced price. That made a difference for my budget.

I have autoimmune flares every now and then and juicing minimizes them. I feel much healthier and have a longer time between flareups. So, for me, the money was well spent. I can make up a pitcher the night before, put it in the fridge, and have my juice waiting first thing in the morning. ALOT less cleanup than having to clean a machine for each glass of juice. LOVE IT!!!!

I ended up buying it from shopko.com since Amazon did not have it in stock. The item that I ordered (and received) is the exact part number that was reviewed by Cook's Illustrated.

All I can say is that Cook's was right. This pan has amazing non-stick properties. I've been using the pan for several months now on a daily basis (I'm on a carb-restricted diet, so I eat fried eggs for breakfast every morning) and the non-stick properties of this pan are simply amazing. No sticking. Clean-up is a breeze. I'm VERY satisfied with this pan and will not hesitate to purchase another when this one wears out (hey, nothing lasts forever).

I have these pans in the 10 and 12 inch sizes. I Like them very much, weight is good not too heavy nor too light. I wash them in the dishwasher even though they recommend handwashing.

I would actually prefer to have these smaller sized pans as the 10" is a little large for cooking for just one.

The nonstick surface is good quality. Again they are not comprable to All Clad in weight but are a good compromise and they don't cost over $100.

I own several Lodge cast iron products and use them everyday. I have 3 teeneage boys that enjoy cooking, and after they destroyed a few teflon coated pans, I decided I would go heavy into cast iron. These pans are indestructible. You can use them in the oven or stovetop, and if you keep it seasoned properly food will not stick. Also, to avoid sticking problems, you may want to remember to allow the pan to get hot before applying oil or food.

As to seasoning, the Logic line now comes preseasoned. But don't make a big deal about this. To season a cast iron skillet simply coat it lightly with oil and bake it for a half hour or so. I have also seasoned these skillets on the stovetop. Cast iron is also great because it does not easily scrap like stainless steel and aluminum pots. Aluminum pans are painful to me, as my teeth fillings react to the aluminum. With cast iron, you won't have this problem. I also take my Lodge pan camping and set it right over the coals to cook. No melted handles or scorched bottoms to mess with.
