review

It works great for cooking and baking! I have always hated greasing the pans, when baking so you don't need to oil or spray down before putting food on it. Just place food on the mat on a tray, and pop it in the oven. They are my go-to item when I'm doing anything in the oven on a baking sheet.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

If you want to STORE food in ball/mason jars, rather than CANNING food, you NEED these.

Here's why:

The two part metal lids & caps that come with the Ball jars are for *CANNING*. These are NOT DESIGNED to be AIR TIGHT! The act of *canning* (pressure cooker, etc) creates a vacuum which seals the metal lid to the jar - the screw part is optional and is to simply hold the metal lid IN PLACE in case the canning fails. They are designed like that so that if the canning process is somehow faulty, and bacteria forms inside the jar, the lid will let the gases escape without making the jar EXPLODE. If you fill a jar up with WATER and put one of these metal lid/screw combos on it, and put it on its side, in a short time you will see it is NOT air or even water tight without a vacuum.

Now, you DO need the metal lids for canning, of course, and also if you're using one of those vacuum sealers with the jar attachment like the FoodSaver (which I recommend).

BUT YOU ALSO NEED THESE PLASTIC LIDS for storing anything else you want in the very handy classic ball/mason jars. The plastic lids ARE water and air tight - so they're perfect for medium-term storage of cereal, cookies, noodles, rice, etc.

One more note - I found that buying two of the 24 piece sets was several dollars cheaper than buying either the 50 or 48 piece sets, and would provide a nicer distribution that would fit my needs better. Prices will change, of course, so this may not always be true, but it was for me.

Here's some comparison data for all the sets put together, with additional data for 2x28 piece, 2x24 piece, and 2x18 piece sets:

While unpacking, I found the 1-qt. bowl was defective. It looks unpolished, hazy, opaque, not clear, see-through glass. There are also scratch marks on the interior surface. The rest of the bowls in the set look fine.

I immediately used Amazon's online returns/replacement option and obtained a free return shipping label. Then Amazon sent me an email, saying they would send a replacement set immediately, and to not return the defective bowl.

Thank you for your great Customer Service, Amazon.com.

Dunno about the quality of these bowls (now made in China, as most everything else, these days). Although the thick rim on the top of the bowls gives the appearance of sturdiness and strength, the bowls' themselves are very thin. Wish the walls were of thicker glass. I hope they don't break easily with regular daily use. I want to use them to melt chocolate over a sauce pan of heated water (placed on the counter, removed from the stove).

11/25/08 Update

Sorry 'bout my mistaken assumption, these bowls were made in USA. (see comments.)

I finally received my replacement set yesterday. That only took nearly 2 weeks! And, this set has a couple bowls chipped along the rims. The same size bowl with the haziness has a bit of haze on the new one, too, but it is clearer than the first.

Chips on the edges of the bowls. Anchor Hocking and/or Amazon really needs to figure out how to pack and ship these safely. There was no marring on the packaging. And not glass shards within the bowls or inner packing. So they must come from the factory like this.

Oh well. I have replaced the 1 bowl. Stuck the hazy, chipped set under the sink, in case one of the 'good set' breaks.

I do love this set! which I use every day. Every size imaginable, for prepping spices to mixing things up.

Just wish they would do quality control at Anchor Hocking. $30 a set is not cheap, why should the quality be?

I use a lot of paper towels for anything from wiping down counters to wiping down kids. These are the most durable I've used but are soft enough that they don't scratch skin. I like the selectable size so I don't waste a big towel on a small mess.

These paper towels work well. But I have to agree with others who think they have been making them thinner this year ( either that or my expectations are getting higher with age...yikes!! :-#

I buy these on Amazon's Subscribe and save (15% odd when you subscribe to 5 items) and often there is a coupon. This is a very good deal.

A thoughtful gift idea for anyone setting up a first-time kitchen, the collection supplies an array of everyday essentials.

10-Piece Cookware Set

Includes:

  • 8-inch open skillet

  • 10-inch open skillet

  • 1-1/2-quart covered saucepan

  • 3-quart covered saucepan

  • 8-quart covered stockpot

  • Universal covered steamer insert (fits both the 1-1/2-quart and 3-quart saucepans)

Use the saucepans to make breakfast oatmeal or homemade marinara sauce, to cook pasta or rice, or to heat up a side of vegetables. With the steamer insert in place, the saucepans can be used to healthfully steam-cook anything from green beans, sugar-snap peas, and asparagus to broccoli, carrots, and baby red potatoes. The stockpot comes in handy when cooking a large batch of soup, stew, or chili. Due to its large size, the stock pot also works well for boiling corn on the cob or creating aromatic stocks with fresh herbs. Finally, the open 8-inch and 10-inch skillets provide wide flat bases and gently curved sides that allow for flipping omelets or sliding grilled cheese sandwiches gracefully from the pan to a plate.

High-Quality Design

What is Multi-Ply Clad Metal Construction?

Multi-ply clad metal construction is a combination of 18/10 surgical stainless steel with a multi-element aluminum core that creates a permanent bond of metal, so heat passes through the whole pan body from the bottom up the side walls, not just at the bottom, for maximum cooking performance.

Aluminum Core
Stainless-steel construction with aluminum core for fast, even heating. View larger.

Durable Stainless Steel with Even-Heating Aluminum Core

As part of Cooks Standard's Multi-Ply Clad Stainless Steel cookware, the collection features three layers of clad metal for high-quality performance and excellent cooking results. The interior surface of the cookware provides a smooth, hard layer of premium-grade 18/10 stainless steel, while the stainless-steel exterior offers an elegant mirror-polished finish for enhanced visual appeal.

Stay-Cool Handles
Stainless-steel handles stay cool to the touch. View larger.

Best of all, an inner core of multi-element alloy aluminum comes sandwiched between the interior and exterior layer of stainless steel for faster heating and excellent heat distribution. The aluminum core extends from the bottom all the way up the side walls for total coverage. It's the best of both--durable stainless steel for strength combined with the fast, thorough heating of aluminum.

Stay-Cool Handles with Air-Flow Technology

Thoughtfully designed, the cookware's solid stainless-steel handles come riveted for strength and provide an open V-shaped design with air-flow technology that keeps the handle cooler and more comfortable to hold when cooking on the stovetop. The long handles on the pans and the generous loop side handles on the pots make the vessels easy to move around on the stovetop or to safely lift and carry, even when full. Though the handles stay cooler to the touch, pot holders or oven mitts are still recommended.

Brushed Stainless-Steel Bases
Scratch-resistant brushed stainless-steel bases. (Induction compatible.)

Other Highlights

The cookware's matching stainless-steel lids fit securely, helping to trap in heat, moisture, and nutrients, plus they come with loop handles for safe, simple placement or removal. Another thoughtful detail includes the cookware's scratch-resistant stainless-steel bases, which come with a brushed finish and that can be safely used on any type of stovetop, including gas, electric, ceramic glass, even induction. Oven-safe up to 500 degrees F, the cookware offers outstanding versatility, transitioning effortlessly from cooking on the stovetop to browning or finishing in the oven (not broiler safe).

Whether cooking up a storm for the holidays or entertaining friends on the weekend, or simply making after-work meals for the family, the 10-piece cookware set provides just the right pieces to make all your culinary endeavors a pleasure. When finished, the pieces clean up easily by hand or in the dishwasher and hanging holes on the handles allow for showcasing the pieces from a pot rack when not in use. Sleek and stylish, Cooks Standard's Multi-Ply Clad Stainless Steel line of cookware carries a limited lifetime warranty.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I don't know if you are at the same stage I was: I wanted to avoid the potential perils of non-stick coatings and yet felt a little apprehensive about using Stainless Steel. There are some very negative reviews for similar products, along the lines that they don't cook anything "right" and a jackhammer is required as standard cleaning equipment. You'll be pleased to know that neither could be further from the truth in my experience using this set (the Cooks Standard Multi-Ply Clad Stainless-Steel 10-Piece Cookware Set). While I don't deny that a select few may have had a negative experience, I hope this review will put your concerns to rest.

I am a first-time Stainless Steel user. I am not a prize-winning chef. I have recently switched to cooking whole-foods from scratch; and I mean recently. So I am not only behind on my cooking skills, but I've never used such high-quality equipment before (dollar-store plastic utensils, anyone?). The turning point came when I found little black bits of non-stick coating in my fresh batch of home-made refried beans. Very frustrating. I can't fault the coating because it was over seven years old. At the first sign of a scratch, non-stick cookware is supposed to be replaced. That's one reason why I was looking for a long-life, heavy duty cookware set with NO COATINGS TO SCRATCH. I read one study that said the fumes from non-stick coatings at high temperatures have killed birds in a lab. Nice. So I threw my "toxic" refried beans in the trash and let my hubby know I couldn't cook with the pot anymore. A week later he bought this set for me (at my recommendation)! I guess he likes my refried beans!

If you want to use this set proficiently and aren't used to stainless steel, you'll have to adjust--not lower--your expectations. It stands to reason that if this cookware is designed differently and made of different materials than the set you are used to, it is going to behave differently. If you want to produce the same results that you're used to, you'll have to adjust your cooking methods. It's actually not hard to do at all. Read the manufacturer's instructions for cooking and cleaning. Watch a couple videos on the web about how to preheat a pan and how to determine it is at the right temperature for pan-frying, etc. It will only take you ten minutes of watching/reading but it will save you from potential disappointment. If others use these sets with no problems, you can too; you'll have to be willing to learn and do what they did. It is exciting to learn a new skill! This is the perfect set for that; because the inner core extends all the way to the top of each pan, they heat up evenly, making it difficult to burn food; a good thing for a novice to know!

These pans look beautiful. The glass lids from my old set fit the pans perfectly, so now I have two sets of lids; I can use glass lids (from my old set) when I want to keep an eye on things, and stainless steel lids for oven cooking. I smile every time I pull these pans out of the drawer; they gleam at me every day! Who said diamonds are a girls' best friend? He/she obviously didn't cook!

I've used all the pans in the two weeks I've had them. I've pan-fried battered fish, salmon, scrambled eggs, taco meat, burgers, home-made Italian sausage, hard-boiled eggs, home-made spaghetti sauce, and dosas with no issues. I've made cream-of-garlic soup, mashed potatoes, spaghetti, and chicken noodle soup in the stock pot. I've used the little pot with the steamer insert for broccoli, green beans, and baby carrots (it's so nice to have brightly colored vegetables that are hot and still a little crisp). They all work brilliantly!

The pans have acquired some mild discoloration on the bottom (caused by use); I have a gas range so they are over an open flame. Bar Keeper's Friend is supposed to get that off so I'm not worried about it. I try to avoid commercial cleaners as much as I can: I have kept these pans otherwise spotless using a mild castile soap, baking soda for a mild discoloration caused by taco meat, and vinegar for a slight starch residue left by some rice. I haven't had any cleaning issues: I rinse the pans out with very hot water from the faucet as soon as I am finished with each and hand-wash them later with a dishrag and soap (the only thing I've had to scrub was a little residue from scrambled eggs: it came off with little effort).

As for sticking: no problems! I make sure to preheat the pan using medium-low heat. I use the preheating time to chop my veggies and prepare side-dishes, so these pans have actually "trained" me to be a better-organized cook. Once the pan is very warm on the edge, I typically reduce the heat to low. That's the great thing about these pans: I used to cook meals on a 6/7 on my gas range with the cheap non-stick pans: now I cook them on a 2/3! Talk about energy savings! The food is fully cooked but more MOIST! Everything tastes better. I told my stepdaughter not to tell my husband that: he'll just have to think I am improving dramatically!

The handles stay cool: the pans are weighty but not too heavy and are well-balanced. I love using them. I don't usually post reviews but I was looking forward to reviewing this product. I've recommended it to my family and friends. While there are higher-end stainless steel sets out there by other brands, they come with a $500-$1000 price tag. This set really is the best deal (at $163) out there with a much better quality than most cookware sets. I highly recommend this set: I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's a challenge to learn something new, but it has been a very rewarding experience.

Green Earth Frying Pan 3-Piece Set by Ozeri (8", 10", 12"), with Textured Ceramic Non-Stick Coating from Germany (100% PTFE and PFOA Free)

Filled under:

Green Earth Frying Pan 3-Piece Set by Ozeri (8", 10", 12"), with Textured Ceramic Non-Stick Coating from Germany (100% PTFE and PFOA Free)

Product Description

Utilizing GREBLON -- an ultra-safe ceramic coating from Germany, the Green Earth Pan by Ozeri is one of the world's first frying pans to achieve non-stick perfection while remaining free of PTFE, PFOA and other harmful chemicals. The Green Earth Frying Pan Set by Ozeri includes an 8, 10 and 12 inch pan with each pan featuring a textured ceramic cooking surface designed to prevent food bonding. The elevations of the textured cooking surface also create air pockets which distribute heat underneath food to enhance cooking performance. Conventional cookware and other ceramic cookware brands achieve their non-stick performance through a coating of PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene), a synthetic substance that has waxy properties. At very high temperatures, PTFE begins to decompose and release fumes which are documented to be lethal to birds and small pets, and which can be harmful to humans. In addition, traditional pans incorporating PTFE are often manufactured with the aid of PFOA (PerFluoroOctanoic Acid), which the EPA has classified as a 'persistent pollutant of the environment'. With the Green Earth Pan's GREBLON ceramic, even under high temperatures, no harmful toxic fumes are ever released into the environment. This is because each pan utilizes a 100% ceramic coating inspired by nature - not a laboratory. Updated May 2012 - I wrote the first review in January. After using these pans daily since we received them, I have to say they're still terrific. I know some of the reviews report that the non-stick coating doesn't last, but we haven't had any issues with them. I don't wash the pans. I do wipe them out with a dish towel as soon as I remove food from them, when they're still warm. I keep them seasoned with a small amount of coconut oil. Occasionally, residue builds up on the side of one of the pans. When that happens, I fill the pan with warm water and add an anti-grease dish soap, such as Dawn or Ful-Sol, and let it soak overnight. Then I just rinse it out and dry it with a towel--no scrubbing and no more residue. I season the pan before using it again. I'm very careful not to use metal utensils for cooking; instead, I use silicon, wood, or utentils made specifically for non-stick pans.

--------

January 2012 - We've been concerned for some time about toxins from traditional non-stick pans. So we invested in high end French cast iron several years ago. They're expensive and heavy, and not as non-stick as we'd hoped. After reading the reviews, we decided to try the 3-Pan set of Green Earth Pans and are delighted we did. As avid Atkins dieters, we eat a lot of protein, particularly eggs and fish. Both brown nicely in the Green Earth pans, and can be cooked with little to no oil or butter. Clean up is simple--just a wipe with a soft cloth or sponge, which we prefer over paper towels. We've been looking at ceramic pans for a while and were careful about investing. Most brands seemed expensive and unproven. The price point with Green Earth was what we were looking for and the Amazon reviews helped us make the decision to buy. It was a good decision, and one we'd make again.

Contrary to some of the reviews here and pics; I tested this scale (the 17.6 lb edition) with standard 50g, 100g, and 500g weights (bought on Amazon).

After taring the scale, it read exactly 50g, 100g, 150g, 500g, 550g, and 600g with the appropriate combinations of the above weights. At 650g, it wavered between 650g and 651g as if it were detecting some value in between (i.e. 650.5g).

For reference, 650 grams = 1.43 lbs. So, from my testing, I would consider this scale accurate to within 1 g up to roughly 1.5 pounds (680.4 g) and from this data I'll estimate a 1% - 1.5% error. For my purposes, that's pretty darn good!

I tried to take pics, but my iPhone won't show the digital readout in the pics. Hope this helps. It's a VERY nice looking scale btw; looks super slick and cool.

review

This is a very nice cutting board especially at the current price point...and believe me, I know cutting boards! As middle-aged, health food and fitness fanatics, we do more than our fair share of cutting...from fresh fruits and veggies to daily juicing, we slice and dice our way through the day. Not surprisingly, we also own (and go through) a substantial number of cutting boards....from small ones for herbs to giant rolling islands, hand crafted single piece wooden cutting boards to butcher block table top versions and everything in between... our cutting boards take a lot of use and abuse. So, when Culina came out with their new line of bamboo cutting boards I was more than eager to give these a try. Here are the first impressions...

1. Nice thickness! First and foremost, this is an impressive thickness for the price. This is a full 1 inch cutting board which might not initially sound like a lot other than the fact that it is a true 1 inch...very solid. Yes, I own much thicker cutting boards including two inch and even four inch butcher blocks but the fact is they are too heavy and overkill for everything other than working with extra large slabs of meat (which few people do these days). So, unless you are a butcher or routinely buy meat by the slab, a 1-2 inch board is more than ample. Given the price and ergonomics, a 1 inch board is almost always preferred and that is exactly what this is...sized right for the modern kitchen!

2. Portable but still appropriate for counter top use. For those who prefer to leave the cutting board on the counter top permanently, this is an appropriate choice. It's finished with rounded corners and a smooth texture that makes it completely acceptable for display throughout the day while still retaining sufficient portability to allow it to be moved when cooking.

3. Bamboo - sustainable and eco-friendly. This may or may not be a concern for you but I prefer wood boards over toxic plastic ones that scratch and soon look old plus have a tendency to get a rough texture over time. Glass eliminates most of the toxicity issues but presents a challenge for storage and the potential for breaking. Additionally, glass gets "stuck" on the counter and doesn't have any type of absorption making it messy to work with fruits and many types of veggies. There is a reason wood has withstood the test of time...it's easy to clean, doesn't break easily, easy to store and thanks to new forms like bamboo - it's now sustainable.

4. Juice channel - Whether working with meat or just fresh fruits and veggies, this cutting board helps keep the counter clean thanks to a drip/juice channel.

5. Well sized. I really like size as it's one of the more common and useful dimensions for use with large amounts of cutting. It also fits nicely on a standard sized counter top while leaving ample space for cleaning and other objects.

6. Knife guard. If you have expensive knives then the added protection is something you will want to pay close attention to...relives the need for constant sharpening and helps keep knives as well as the board functioning at top efficiency.

5. Overall, a well built cutting board. Complimentary product provided for evaluation purpose.

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) This design is one I have not run across before and I am impressed with how easy it is to use and how well it works.

I have owned T-Fal products in the past and have not been impressed, but this pressure cooker is impressive. I already own a beautiful, 10-quart polished 18-10 stainless Fagor Duo pressure cooker that works really well so I'll make some comparisons to it in this review.

The T-Fal lid design makes putting it on and taking it off quite easy. Most pressure cookers require lining up the lid with latches on the pan then pressing down and turning the lid to lock it in place. The T-Fal design locks the lid in place without lining up or turning anything. Instead you just set the lid on top and press down on the red button on top. The latches spring into place, locking the lid down, ready to go. Once pressurized a safety latch pops into place to prevent accidental release, but once the pressure is gone, the latches release by simply pressing the red button on the side of the top knob.

The T-Fal has only one pressure setting, whereas the Fagor Duo has low and high. If you need a low pressure setting, the T-Fal won't work for you, but most recipes work with the high pressure setting.

The Fagor has 18-10 stainless stamped into the bottom, but the T-Fal merely states that it is stainless... must be a cheaper mix.

There is a significant heat distribution encapsulation on the bottom that seems to be good, but it is stainless steel, not copper or aluminum, so it transfers heat much slower. Still, it is good at distributing heat to prevent hot spots. I cooked a pot of beans and had no problems with hot-spot burning. They came out great.

The T-fal has it's drawbacks, though. Since a lot more metal is required for this lid design, the 6 liter model weighs in 6 ounces heavier than my 10 liter Fagor. Still, it's not unwieldy. In addition, the T-Fal has a rubber gasket, whereas the Fagor has a silicone one. Although the rubber gasket works fine, silicone is better.

If I had to choose between the T-Fal and the Fagor for a $15-20 more, I'd choose the Fagor. But if you need the ease of the lid design on the T-Fal and don't mind the weight factor or rubber gasket, then the T-Fal is a good buy and I recommend it.

LOVE this brand! I tried several other brands but kept coming back to this one. And in case you're curious to see what the inside looks like, I've included a picture. When you open it up, the top part holds about 3 heaping tablespoons of coffee, and below the coffee grounds is a cute little filter. It's constructed very well and I've never had any issues with coffee grounds leaking.

We lived in Italy for 3 years, and I really got into gourmet coffee, and some very bold Italian brands. But, now I'm hooked on the Donut Shop brands. They just taste darn good!!

As others have said, this infrared thermometer is a degree or two off but they admit that. Let's face it, this is not a medical or scientific device. It is to see if your pizza stone is hot enough or whether your water is about the right temp. It works fine for things like that. For the money it is great.

Lodge LCS3 Pre-Seasoned Cast-Iron Chef's Skillet, 10-inch

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Lodge is my favorite cast iron label because it is well made and inexpensive. Now it even comes pre-seasoned, although it still requires some additional seasoning before it reaches top nonstick form. This can be done by baking it with oil or bacon/ham grease or just by using it to cook a few times. The more cast iron is used properly, the more nonstick it becomes. If one learns to change cooking habits, following usage and cleaning instructions, better results will be achieved in short order.

Unaware of the Teflon industry unethically hiding their toxicity reports from the public and the government for more than 20 years (not to mention the toxins they dumped into the environment), I raised my children on Teflon nonstick pans. None of my food ever turned out with the flavorful browned finish that cast iron provides, but I was lazy and I bought into the idea of the new conveniences. Now that I know Teflon is actually dangerous to not only our individual health but to the planet, I've replaced all of my Teflon with cast iron, bought cast iron for my young adult children, and I'm trying to help them learn to cook on it so they too will learn that it is not only better for their health, but it also produces superior texture and flavor.

I started by going back and remembering how my grandmother used hers. It is all she used until she died at 91-years-old. Her cookware is still entirely useable and has been divided up among relatives.

Grandmother cooked everything on cast iron, and she knew how to use pieces in multiple ways so that she required fewer of them. For example, she used her large fry pan to cook homemade pancakes by turning it upside down on the burner and using the bottom as a griddle! Because she kept an empty coffee can of recycled bacon and ham grease next to her stove (lard) and used it as her cooking oil, she never needed to re-season. Her pans were completely nonstick from all of the use. While most of us will not recycle meat grease and cook with it, we can do the same with the olive and vegetable oils we use.

A contemporary concern often expressed is that it must be unhealthy to clean pans without dishwashing detergent. I remind my children that their great-grandparents lived to just under and just over 90-years-old (neither died from a cancer) and never once washed their cookware with detergent. They used only hot water. Our entire family grew up eating Grandmother's cooking and none of us were sickened by it. Remembering that reminds me that much of our concern with hyper-cleanliness has been marketed to us so we will buy innumerable products we do not really need; products that actually have hurt overall health by inhibiting our opportunities to strengthen our immune systems, and now we have actually introduced too many antibacterial products into our environment as well. Grandmother did dry her pans by placing them over a hot burner and that will kill bacteria, but it is not necessary to dry cast iron that way. Because drying pans over a hot burner uses more energy, I towel dry mine and I've never been made sick by doing so.

Reasons to switch:

1. Food has better flavor and texture

2. No toxins in the air or in the food to worry about.

3. No dishwashing detergent used so it is better for the planet and for the wallet.

4. For good results, cooking with lower heat is required, which means less energy use and that also is better for the environment and the wallet.

5. Less expensive to purchase than nonstick considered "high quality" and much more durable so rarely does any of it need replacing. The same pans can be used by multiple generations. One more reason cast iron is better for the environment and our pocketbook.

6. Small amounts of healthy iron added to our diets without a mineral supplement in pill form.

7. Weight of pieces forces at least a little weight lifting every day which is better for our muscles, therefore our overall health, including contributing to staving off osteoporosis.

8. Because it is easier to wash right after use and needs to be dried right away, pans do not pile up cluttering the kitchen and hanging over our heads as a chore we are avoiding.

9. To stop rewarding the Teflon industry for lying to us with withheld toxicity reports as they sold us products that were actually slowly poisoning our children.

10. To stop rewarding the Teflon industry for dumping toxins into our waterways and releasing toxic gases into the air during the manufacturing process.

11. To hold cookware manufacturers, distributors, and retailers responsible and accountable for what they choose to market and sell to us.

Reasons to purchase Lodge brand:

1. Well made

2. Readily available

3. Inexpensive

4. For those who do not want to go to the store, it can be purchased from Amazon with free shipping.
