I must admit that I have gone a little overboard with my k-cup sampling. So far I must have tried about 50 different blends. OVerall I must say that the vast majority of them have been pleasant, better than what I used to make in my coffee brewer. Then I tried the Donut Shop brand. When I first tried this I was not expecting much, it sounds bland, plain, everyday type of coffee. Don't get me wrong, I have had some pretty good cups of coffee in donut shops but nothing to write home about. When I took my first sip, I thought wow, this is amazing. Smooth, not much of an acid taste, about as close to perfect as I could describe. My love for this k-cup continued and continues to this day. Many times you find a k-cup which at first is very good, but after a couple of cups you get a little sick of them; not with this one. It has been and continues to be my absolute favorite. I will still search for something better, but I doubt I will find it. I hope you like -- no strike that -- I hope you love this coffee as much as I do.

My family purchases many "staple" items through Amazon's "Subscribe and Save" program. We've saved money on everyday products from razor blades to toilet paper. And we enjoy the convenience of having these items delivered to our door, especially in the case of bulky items like paper towels. But as soon as I saw the impossibly small box that held 15 "regular" sized rolls of Brawny paper towels, I knew we had made a mistake. These rolls are TINY. They look about 1/2 the size of a regular roll of paper towels you'd buy in a grocery store.

Brawny is still the strongest and most absorbent paper towel on the market, and we will continue to use Amazon's excellent "Subscribe and Save" program for many other products. But this particular package costs way too much for half-sized rolls of paper towels.

As others have said, this infrared thermometer is a degree or two off but they admit that. Let's face it, this is not a medical or scientific device. It is to see if your pizza stone is hot enough or whether your water is about the right temp. It works fine for things like that. For the money it is great.

I am glad that it comes with the the cleaning brush, as the bits of vegetables do get stuck down in there so best to utilize it to get them out. Culina comes with a lifetime warranty. With the 18/10 stainless steel and the feel of this pot, I'm pretty sure they'll never have to honor it. It shines like sterling. I made a video to show how this comes and how beautiful it is. I tried to show how thick and nicely made the bottom of the pan is, aiding in even heat distribution.

Honestly, I've received a few different review items from this company and each time I am more impressed than the last. I have to be careful to not sound like a shill or a paid reviewer for Culina by fully expressing how blown away I am. I want to be clear, these pots are obnoxiously nice. It makes me want to be a better cook. In actuality, I am giving this to my mother. She is already an amazing cook and when she saw these, the look on her face told me before she had to say a word that I would not be keeping them for myself.

Currently I own a rather extensive set of All Clad. This stuff is at least as nice. Not exaggerating. I have no affiliation with this company whatsoever.

Keurig My K-Cup Reusable Coffee Filter

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Being frugal (all right, cheap) by nature, I held off on buying a single-serve coffeemaker until I could find one I liked that offered a reusable filter. When Keurig came out with the B-40 Elite, a handsome, reasonably priced unit, and announced that it would be releasing its "My K-Cup" reusable filter for separate sale early in 2006, I was primed. As soon as I saw this product on Keurig's website, I was ready to buy my new coffeemaker from Amazon.com and the filter from Keurig's web site. My only wish was that Amazon.com would stock the reusable filter so buyers could purchase the coffeemaker and filter in one fell swoop, and here my wish is about to come to pass!

I have had my Keurig B-40 Elite for about a month now, and I've had great success with it. Bear in mind that if you're using the reusable filter, you must first remove the black plastic K-Cup holder from the unit's filter assembly (instructions on how to do this are included with "My K-Cup"; the black piece in the coffeemaker's filter basket doesn't act like it's supposed to come out, but it is, and it does).

Also, I've read elsewhere that some people don't like having to remove the reusable filter and clean it out after every use. However, I've found it to be a relatively simple affair: the reusable filter doesn't drip when you remove it, and takes about 30 seconds to rinse out after each use. You can use it again right away to brew successive cups.

One caveat is that the output splashes a bit when using the My K-Cup filter, so I always have a damp paper towel at the ready when I brew a cup. That having been said, I'm really happy to be using my own coffee and saving lots of money in the process. Those who are, like me, loathe to shell out 55 cents a cup for K-Cups will probably really like the new My K-Cup.

review

I guess I fat-fingered my order. I wanted to order the 80 count version of SFBC's "Fog Chaser", but wound up with 80 of these instead. I really liked the Fog Chaser more than any other k-cup I'd tred, but Organic Rainforest Blend (ORB) is even better! At first I was just going to send it back because the label was green, so I thought this meant it was decaf. I never drink decaf because I'm afraid I might get rickets or just drift off into a coma. But I decided to run one through the Kerug, and stockpile them for my health-freak friends if I didn't like em.

NOT DECAF!

Nope. This is high voltage +p pharmaceutics grade coffee. The weird part is how great it tastes.

I'm not a coffee nerd; just a guy who likes a rich cup of black coffee with a few extra amps in it. Amps it has. After a cup of ORB, I got into a conversation with my wife where I actually did most of the talking! But even if it didn't peg out the caffeine meter, I'd say it still has about the best flavor of any coffee I've ever tried. I think the roast is medium to dark. In the cup it has a LOT of oil. It actually gets that ring of light brown foam around the edge like good espresso. It's really sweet (for coffee), and I can't imagine putting any sweetener in it. Hearty, and yet refined; not exactly Old West, or Cafe de Paris, but I can imagine a cowboy and a mime fighting over the last cup. ... then again, maybe that's just the caffeine talking.

NB: There is a lot of cool stuff on the box about the great stuff the company does; you know, if you have time for that sort of thing.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

I've had this cookware for about 3 years now and love it! It heats fast and evenly, is well made, and very attractive. This line is well constructed and if properly cared for the pans should last forever. I have all three skillet sizes (8", 10", and 12"), two saute pans (3 qt., and 6 qt.), two saucepans (1.5 qt. and 3.5 qt.), and the 6 qt. stock pot. I started with a 7-piece set from Amazon and have since added pieces here and there either when they're on sale or I have some extra cash. Bed Bath & Beyond is a great place to pick up open stock pieces (20% off coupons!), so are Amazon and Cookwarenmore.com (which has "irregular" pieces with minor cosmetic imperfections at deep discounts). I would like to round out the set with the other two saucepan sizes (1 qt. and 2 qt.) and the larger stock pot (8 qt.) to have a complete set to last me the rest of my life.

I used to have a non-stick collection from Costco that I wanted to phase out due to health concerns regarding the teflon coating. It just didn't seem right or natural, and ingesting any teflon flakes that scraped off made me nervous. The interior cooking surface of the MC2 line is the exact same stainless steel surface that all All-Clad lines have. It's bulletproof and cooks amazingly. I haven't had any sticking problems with the MC2 line- just remember to pre-heat the pan for a minute or so before you add any oil or food. I don't have any non-stick pieces, so I can't speak to those.

This set has an outer layer of brushed aluminum alloy instead of the shiny stainless steel that other All-Clad lines have. This gives it a cool industrial look that the inevitable scratches look more at home on. It also gives the cookware a bigger overall mass of aluminum that should transfer heat faster and better than the stainless exterior pans. The downsides to this exterior are that its not recommended for the dishwasher and that it is NOT induction cooktop compatible. I would hand wash regardless and prefer gas, so these aren't issues for me, but they might be for you.

The set cleans up easily (use some Bar Keeper's Friend for stubborn spots). I put a piece in the dishwasher once and the exterior oxidized and darkened- Some BKF and elbow grease had it looking new again in no time. I would stick with All-Clad's recommendation of hand washing.

The long stay cool handles do stay cool while cooking and you won't need a kitchen towel or pot holder for these. If you grab close to the base of the handle, it's going to be hot though. The short helper handles and lid handles do, however, get hot while cooking. This isn't a design flaw, it's just how they are, but they will require a pot holder or towel to grab while cooking.

I think this is the best value in the All-Clad line as it's the least expensive, cooks better than the more expensive stainless line (due to the higher Aluminum content) and has a cool commercial look. The only downsides to the MC2 line are it's not induction compatible and the line isn't as extensive as the more mainstream stainless line. For me the cost savings, thermal superiority, and commercial look outweigh these drawbacks. You won't go wrong with any piece of All-Clad, MC2 or otherwise.

T-fal P2510737 Stainless Steel Dishwasher Safe PFOA Free Pressure Cooker Cookware, Silver

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?) This T-Fal Healthy Choice pressure cooker is a good choice for everyone, but for anyone who has never used a pressure cooker there are a lot of features that take the guesswork out of using this one. The orange valve on the top has clearly marked pressure levels for high and low pressure, steam quick release and pressure off. It's easy to see by the steam coming out of the valve when the cooker has achieved full pressure. With my first pressure cooker I wasn't always sure if pressure was up or if I had the top on correctly. This one is pretty foolproof and I like the two different pressure settings. It's easy to overcook delicate vegetables or really any green vegetable and end up with mush. Most fresh vegetables take only about 4 or 5 minutes, with the exception of artichokes which take about 14 minutes. (Isn't that great, no long cooking time!) The low pressure settling gives you a little more leeway on the time.

Don't be afraid of using a pressure cooker! Pressure cookers now days have so many safety valves and releases that you probably couldn't blow one up if you tried. I've been using them for years and the worst thing that ever happened was gunking up the bottom with burnt sugar when trying to make rice pudding and cooking it too long. (I now put the pudding ingredients in a bowl that fits in the cooker and set it on the stand. A little water in the bottom steams it under pressure.)

I use my pressure cooker several times a week and I use the pot without the top often as well because it's a nice size. I use it for cooking dry beans which I forgot to soak in about 20 to 25 minutes. Dry beans are a lot less expensive than canned and they taste so much better without the additives. It also cuts down on all the cans that have to be recycled so it's better for the environment. I use it to cook artichokes in about 14 minutes. We don't often eat meat but on St. Patrick's Day I can make falling-apart corned beef in about 45 minutes. I've cooked boneless chicken for about 30 minutes til it's like pulled chicken and added BBQ sauce. Tastes almost like pulled pork. Soups and chili can be cooked for half an hour or so and taste like they were simmering all day. Same with sauces.

The only complaint I have with this cooker is that there weren't a lot of instructions included. There's enough to be able to use it but it included only a short list of cooking times for a few foods. It wouldn't have taken much to add a few recipes with cooking times for people who are new to pressure cookers.

I want to add that cooking times are always approximate and the size of the hunk of meat or the age of the dried beans can affect the time. (Older ones take longer.) If in doubt you can always cook a little shorter time and then add some time if needed. I also will add some ingredients later and bring to pressure again. Like black bean soup with sherry, I add the sherry when I add the peeled and diced sweet potatoes after the beans are almost done. You find that you get the feel of how long foods take to cook after a while. I do a lot of experimenting and have only rarely have had something turn out really badly. If you use bouillon or broth to cook beans they come out really good. Adding herbs seems to infuse both beans and meat with their flavor.

The pressure cooker saves on electricity with my electric stove because once I get the pot up to pressure, I can turn the heat way way down and it will still hold the pressure. When releasing the pressure when you're done, be sure to stand back from the pressure valve. The steam is hot and it comes out fast at first. The dimensions of this cooker without the top are about 9.25 in diameter by 6.5 inches tall. (I always have a hard time picturing the size by the number of ounces or liters it holds.)

Since this pressure cooker doesn't come with recipes, here are a couple of books that I can recommend. The first comes in an inexpensive Kindle version: Vegetarian Pressure Cooker Recipe Book: 50 High Pressure Recipes for Busy People (See my review of 2/2/14) and this one has been updated, but the original has been around a long time: Great Vegetarian Cooking Under Pressure and comes in both a hardcover and Kindle version.

review

Unlike some other reviewers who make candles/soap or work with lead, I don't have a recurring use case for needing a accurate, non-contact temperature readings.

Which doesn't mean this isn't great fun, and potentially very useful.

Here are some remotely measured temperature values (all Fahrenheit from around the house):

Freezer compartment (kitchen refrigerator/freezer): -10.3 degrees

Freezer compartment (garage refrigerator/freezer): 2.0 degrees

Refrigerator compartment (kitchen refrigerator/freezer): 38.8 degrees

Refrigerator compartment (garage refrigerator/freezer): 43.3 degrees

Dog's back (short hair, indoors): 88.1 degrees

Dog's belly (exposed skin): 92.3 degrees

Own cheek (interior): 98.4 degrees

Own skin (forearm): 91.2 degrees

Grass at dusk (ambient air temp: 77 degrees): 64 degrees

Asphalt driveway at dusk (after daytime high of 83 degrees): 78 degrees

No wonder the cat sleeps on the driveway.

All of these temperatures are where I would expect them to fall, and so I'm confident of the claimed "plus/minus 2 degrees (C) accuracy.

Unit ships with a 9V battery and a decent user guide.

Select with confidence.

+ Big jar, lots of room.

+ Mouth is wide enough to allow a dishwasher to clean out the inside.

+ There's a rubbery seal that fits around the perimeter of the lid. Both the seal and the lid can be removed for cleaning.

+ The metal clasps provide very tight hold-down force, so liquids will stay inside.

- The metal must be removed before cleaning, as it is not stainless steel - it's plain zinc-plated carbon steel, so it will be able to rust in time.

CUSTOMER REVIEW

review

EDITED 2014 - This is a review of the original 3 blade version of this slicer which I far prefer to the newer four blade model. If you are deciding between the two I think there is no comparison. While the newer version looks slicker and is more self contained, it just doesn't handle the veggies near as well as this one does. I've reviewed the other machine if you want to have a look and see my issues with it. But this 3 blade version is phenomenal and a staple in my kitchen. Easily one of the best gadgets ever made in my opinion. Read on.....

--

I had to interrupt my cooking to write this review. Believe me, I am not easily moved to write product reviews. This would be my second here on amazon (since the writing of this review three years ago I have added many more product reviews here on amazon).

But, this little turning slicer is amazing. Simply amazing. It makes quick work of everything I throw at it and to date that would include:

radishes

carrots

cucumbers

onions (they work a little differently from the other vegetables)

kohlrabi (makes a fabulous, refreshing salad)

zucchini (I can never remember how many "Ns" are in that vegetable)

apples and,

sweet potatoes

I may even have done a celeriac but I can't recall for sure.

This device never balks.

And it is a pleasure to clean.

I had to give up pasta a few months back and I found myself missing the act of twirling long strands of food on a fork. It was then that I searched for a spiral slicer, not sure if one existed that could meet my fork twirling needs. I bought this little gem because I figured it was inexpensive enough that if I didn't like it all that much, it wouldn't be too much of a hardship.

Honestly, for what this does I would easily pay twice or three times the price.

As I write this I am in the middle of spiralling cucumbers for the old family cucumber salad recipe. Many of the strands that come out of this thing get close to 2 feet long. Food prep doesn't get much more fun than that. The First four (large) cucumbers took all of 4 minutes to break down into perfect, long, spirally strands. I have four more to go when I finish this review.

Okay, some of the reviewers here have complained that you lose about 3/8ths from the center of anything you are spiraling, and this is indeed true. In the case of cucumbers, that means that the device is essentially getting rid of those pesky seeds for you but in the case of a carrot, you lose a bit of viable vegetable. Do I mind this? NO, who cares. Use that center 3/8ths carrot piece for something else, or snack on it while you shred the rest of your veggies. Its not as if the center 3/8ths isn't usable, it just isn't made into long spirally strands. So, it wouldn't make sense to try to shred baby carrots or asparagus because they aren't much larger than 3/8ths of an inch so there wouldn't be much to spiral.

I can't speak to the durability of this slicer because, alas, I've only owned it for two months as of this writing. So far so good however and it does seem durable. It is well designed. The extra blades snap into a holder in the middle of the slicer so you aren't likely to lose them nor are you likely to cut yourself on them inadvertantly. Though lightweight, the whole unit feels fairly sturdy and I can't imagine needing to replace it for a long long time. The whole thing suctions onto your work surface which makes it very manageable. I've started using it in preparations where hitherto I've used a mandolin slicer. This spiral slicer doesn't make it easy to cut off fingertips the way you can with a mandolin.

On a final note before I get back to the cucumber salad.... I do not like kitchen devices that make a job longer than it needs to be and that includes gadgets that take forever to clean or have sharp edges to wash and be careful of. You could hurt yourself with this thing but honestly you would have to try pretty hard to do that. it doesn't want to hurt you and the company seem to have thought of everything so that it would only really injure someone determined to draw blood. it is not a child's toy however and so it requires the same respect you would give any other item with sharp blades.

There is one minor quibble I have with the device and hope that the company reads this and deals with it in a future incarnation of the product... when the spirals come out it is a little bit difficult to manage where they will end up. It would be nice if they design a catch basin type thing for the strands as they fall from the blades. This is a minor quibble because you really can catch all the strands if you're careful but I just don't want to have to be careful all the time.

Okay, that's it, back to my cucumber salad.

EDITED July 2013 -- THOUGHTS AFTER 3 YEARS OF OWNERSHIP:

I still absolutely love this thing. It continues to work flawlessly and fairly effortlessly, breaking down all kinds of vegetables. Admittedly my favorites are cucumbers and zucchini but I have spiralized many others as noted above. In all this time it hasn't stained (as many of these gadgets do) and the blades don't seem to have lost any of their effectiveness. I admit that cleaning it, while still relatively easy, is not child's play. Still, it doesn't take long.

I used to put my zucchini noodles in a vegetable basket on the grill with some spiralized onions and coated with a bit of olive oil, salt, pepper and garlic and they were a crowd pleaser every time. But it has been brutally hot and humid here so I thought I would go for something a little more refreshing. I served the noodles raw (using the smallest blade) and coated them with a homemade "guacamole" sauce. This was another crowd pleaser and rivals the cucumber salad.

3 years later and I can't sing the praises of this thing highly enough. I just really don't understand the naysayers.... particularly the folks who complain about the wasted vegetable "core" Get creative and find something to do with it. Challenge yourself!

Most of all I am impressed by how well this thing has held up.

UPDATE AUGUST 2013....

There seems to be much debate about whether this little unit suctions effectively to the work surface. For me, it does. I have a polished granite countertop. I am going to guess that this suctions much less well (if at all) to some lightly textured formicas. That may well be where the debate stems from.

Have had them for like three months now. 2013 review - I bought the 15 piece set because I felt it was a better deal and came with all the lids and the steamer is pretty cool. This set has been amazing!

IMPORTANT:::: As long as you season the nonstick like the directions say the nonstick will stay for a long time. I used coconut oil to season the pans before I use them because coconut oil has really small molecules to penetrate deep into the surface. This keeps my pans looking great and very usable. I am loving the fact that they are non- toxic!

IRRELEVANT stuff ::::(p.s. LADIES::: coconut oil is the only oil on earth with molecules small enough to penetrate the hair cuticle and it makes a great hair treatment for less and it's all natural and great for the skin even as a natural lubricant ***wink wink **!!!!)

You would think because they are white on the inside that they would be hard to clean but since I use the coconut oil to season the pans the food just slides right off with hot water! They heat up super fast and really even on my crappy electric stove. I also love the handles very ergonomic and comfortable.

MUY MUY IMPORTANTE:::: FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS for care and you won't end up like some of these 3star 2star reviewers.

:::::DO NOT USE HIGH HEAT SETTING ON THESE PANS!::::: They don't need it! The medium-high heat is like high heat for these pans they evenly distribute all the heat very well. If you use high heat for everything you will ruin these pans.I had to drill that into my husbands head! lol

I will def purchase these again if I had to in the future!

:::::P.S. ALSO EQUALLY IMPORTANT:::::If you do buy them make sure you keep the cardboard packaging to stack them. DO NOT stack these unless you have a paper towel or something to protect them from scratching.

This device is perfect for anyone who finds that they don't consume an entire bottle of wine at one sitting and would like to preserve the wine for as long as possible without it ruining. Wine can be an expensive luxury and there is nothing worse than having it turn to vinegar due to improper storage. This device is amazingly simple to use and works perfectly. Simply insert one of the rubber stoppers into the open bottle of wine, place the pump over the top and pump about 5 to 6 times until you hear a distinctive "clicking" sound and you are done. All of the excess oxygen in the bottle has now been removed and the wine is vacuum sealed. When ready to re-serve the wine, simply press the nib on top of the stopper to release the vacuum, remove and serve. It couldn't be any easier or simpler. Well worth the price and you may want to consider purchasing the extra stoppers if you tend to have more than a couple of bottles open at any one time.
